How to Register to Vote in the UK
To be eligible to vote in the upcoming General Election – 4th July 2024
Important Deadlines
- Register to vote: Midnight, Tuesday, 18 June 2024
- Apply for a postal vote: 5pm, Wednesday, 19 June 2024
- Apply for a proxy vote: 5pm, Wednesday, 26 June 2024
Eligibility to Register
To register to vote in the UK, you must:
- Be aged 18 or over
- Be a British citizen, an Irish citizen, or a qualifying Commonwealth citizen
- Be a resident at an address in the UK, or a British citizen living abroad who has been registered in the UK in the past 15 years
Steps to Register
- Online Registration:
- You can register online. The process usually takes about 5 minutes.
- Click here to register to vote
- Information Needed:
- Your National Insurance number
- Your address details
- If you need to update your name, address, or nationality, register again with your new details.
Voting Requirements
- Photo Identification: You need to provide photographic ID to vote at a polling station. For details on accepted forms of ID, visit the voter ID page. If you do not have an acceptable form of ID, apply for a free voter authority certificate by 5pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.
Voting Options
- Voting by Post:
- If you cannot vote in person, apply for a postal vote.
- Your application must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, 19 June 2024.
- Photo ID is not required for postal voting.
- Voting by Proxy:
- If you want someone to vote on your behalf, appoint a proxy.
- The proxy must vote at your polling station and provide their own photo ID.
- The deadline for proxy applications is 5pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.
There’s a different process to register anonymously, for example if you’re concerned about your safety or the safety of someone in your household.
